Jia was born into a large family; she is the 8th of 10 children born to Gilbert and Irene Apple. It was with these brothers and sisters that Jia learned to sing, throw a football and explore ideas for her life’s work.
The world of art opened up for Jia during high school through the care and teaching of Shirley Geier. Shirley presented Jia with options and ideas and cultivated a love for art and learning. Following this high school introduction, Jia studied with Dr. Harvey Collins at Olivet Nazarene University (ONU). Here she learned to develop her artistic skills and confidence.
Over the past 20 years, Jia has had a broad reach across the art spectrum-providing private art lessons and producing a wide variety of two-dimensional works in mediums including, acrylic, oil, watercolor and graphite. She has been commissioned by ONU for its' pen and ink architectural renderings as well as a 5 ft by 8 ft oil depicting The Trumpet Shall Sound from Handel's Messiah, currently on display at the university's Centennial Chapel. Most recently, her work has grown very large – literally. She is painting murals in Truth or Consequences, NM, where her new goal is to paint the town! Three murals can be seen at the Hamilton Military museum and one at the Community Health Foundation Thrift Store on Broadway.
Jia is a working artist active in the Sierra County art community with a keen interest in public art and outreach. She sits on the Public Arts Board in TorC. She is also a co-owner of the Passion Pie Cafe-home to the tabletop art gallery. She is the co-owner of The Brazen Fox Taqueria where she designed the interior décor. She is the Founder and leader of the Young da Vinci’s, a group of young adults learning the craft of outdoor murals. Jia, along with her partner, are Airbnb super hosts. They have developed two properties for those wishing to enjoy the beautiful aspects of Truth or Consequences, NM and the surrounding areas.
