Interview Date: August 29, 2015
Location: Colfax, Washington
Timothy Ely is a painter, graphic artist, and book artist living in Colfax, Washington. Born and raised in Snohomish Washington where he developed his curiosity and explored the world through his local public library, his father’s hardware store, and his own experimentations. His drive to create showed itself early in his life and he looked for and used any supplies that were on hand. This included anything from ballpoint pens and paper bags to putting to use the numerous tools he had access to in his father’s toolbox.
Timothy received his Bachelor’s degree from Western Washington University in 1972 and his MFA from University of Washington in 1975. Tim has spent much of his adult life exploring the many attributes of the book, from its construction to its potential to hold and carry the magic of his paintings, drawings, and his “cribriform” - a secret language he’s created.
